UNIONVILLE — The Community Vikings trailed the Huntland Hornets heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Vikings erupted for three runs without the benefit of a hit to take the lead and the win as Community took a 5-3 decision in a non-district baseball game Friday night.
The Vikings held to Hornets to just three runs despite Huntland leaving runners on base in each inning and stranding 12 runners for the game.
The Hornets used sacrifice flies in both the second and third innings to score runs as Huntland took a 2-0 lead.
Huntland challenged in the fourth as three walks loaded the bases, but the Vikings escaped unscathed as the Hornets could not add to their lead.
Community took advantage of two walks to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.
After the Vikings scored their first run on an error following a stolen base, Sam Holley connected on a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
The Hornets pieced together three hits to score a run and take a 3-2 lead in the fifth before the Vikings came back in the sixth.
After a hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases with one out, Maki Fleming and Dylan Norris each drew walks to force in runs and give Community a 4-3 lead.
A sacrifice fly by Mason Russell gave the Vikings an insurance run and a 5-3 advantage.
Huntland put the tying run on base to lead off the seventh, but Viking hurler Blaine Paschal reached back for a little extra and struck out the side to preserve the Community win.
Jaxon Roberts pitched the first three innings and struck out two for the Vikings while Paschal came on in the fourth and fanned eight to record the win.
Russell drilled two doubles to lead the Vikings at the plate.
