COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglette and District 8-AA Champion, Freshman Lilly Smith, won the Individual Region 5-AA Tournament on Monday, punching her ticket to the State Tournament in the process.
Smith took down Emmy Bragga from Cookeville in her first match of the day in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the Region 5-AA Championship Match.
In the Final, Smith dropped the first set to Marian Swindell from White County, 5-7, in a tiebreaker, but then battled back to win the second set, 6-3. This set up a winner-take-all third set, and Smith quickly dispatched Swindell, 6-1, to lock up the title in comeback fashion.
With the win, Smith secured her place in the State Tournament, beginning Thursday, May 22, in Murfreesboro with times and opponents TBA.
Meanwhile, for the Golden Eagles, Henry Stone fell to Cookeville’s Dual Beak in straight sets, 2-6, 6-1, in the final match of his career on Monday.
