Wessner pitching, Mitchell hitting lead Viqueens past Summertown

MURFREESBORO — The Community Viqueens were not content to just show up in the school's first ever game at the TSSAA state softball tournament Tuesday night.
The Viqueens showed they had more fish to fry as Taylar Wessner pitched a two-hit shutout and Haley Mitchell provided the only runs with a two-run double as Community defeated the Summertown Lady Eagles 2-0 in the Class 2A tilt.
"I'm proud of a freshman on the bump getting it done and Haley Mitchell came in with a very timely hit," Coach Cam Farrell of the Viqueens said.
With Wessner and Lady Eagle pitcher Hannah Lindsey locked in a pitcher's duel, the game took on an early look that runs would be at a premium.
The Lady Eagles threatened in the top of the third as the first two runners reached on a single and walk.
But Wessner dialed in to strikeout the next batter and forced two flyouts as the game remained scoreless.
After a lead-off walk and stolen base in the fourth, Summertown put the go-ahead run in scoring position with no outs.
Wessner was once again true to the test as two pop-ups and a ground out kept the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard.
Community (26-11-1) took advantage of its most serious threat in the bottom of the fourth.
Abbi Murrill led off with a single before a pair of fielder's choices left the Viqueens with Wessner on first and two out.
Carlie Blanton reached base on an error, putting runners at second and third and setting the stage for Mitchell.
After fouling off three pitches and taking a ball, Mitchell drilled the 1-2 pitch over the right fielder's head, scoring Wessner and Blanton as the Viqueens took a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles could only manage one base runner the rest of the way as Wessner and the Viqueen defense shined.
A sliding catch to lead off the top of the seventh by Zoey Dixon kept the Summertown leadoff runner off the base paths as Wessner retired the side in order to give the Viqueens their first state tournament victory.
"Zoey Dixon came up with a huge catch," Farrell said. "Every time we play, that kid gets better."
Wessner struck out four and walked two while Lindsey allowed three hits while striking out three and walking one.
"My thing is, don't be harping on who we play, just go play," Farrell said. "Have a good time and make sure your mind's right."
"People have come to watch you," Farrell added. “Don't have people come and pay all this money and go out here and look silly."
"It's not about winning and losing," Farrell said.  "Just get over here and play good softball and take it one game at a time and then we'll see where we're at."
Community will face Alcoa Wednesday in the semifinals of the winner's bracket at 11:30 a.m.
