CHAPEL HILL — During the previous two meetings against the Forrest Lady Rockets, the Community Viqueens pushed the defending Class AA state champions to the brink, but fell short by a single run in both meetings.
Hoping to break a 4-0 Lady Rocket win-streak in the Region 4-AA championship on Wednesday, the Viqueens took an early lead, but were plagued by errors and came up short in a 14-6 loss to Forrest.
Zoey Dixon drove in the game’s first run on a RBI single and Carlie Blanton followed with a bases-loaded walk to take an early 2-0 lead over the Lady Rockets.
Forrest responded by plating seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, aided by a slew of Viqueen errors.
Although starting pitcher Taylar Wessner settled in and delivered a 1-2-3 second inning, Forrest played add on and scored four more runs in the bottom of the third to take an 11-2 lead over the Purple and Gold.
It wasn’t until a leadoff triple in the fourth inning that Community was able to string together several hits and make a run at the Forrest lead.
Murrill tripled to lead off and then scored on a RBI single by Abi Brown.
Community plated two more runs on a sacrifice fly and when Dixon ground out to first.
Wessner followed with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth inning, highlighted by a double play to end the inning.
Trailing 11-5, the Viqueens further cut into the Lady Rocket lead in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Brown, but that was the extent of the run support the Viqueens were able to muster up.
Forrest went on to plate three more runs for the eight-run victory.
Both squads connected on 10 hits, with Murrill and Wessner recording the only two extra base hits for the Purple and Gold.
Brown went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Dixon was 1-for-2 with two RBIs as well.
Wessner went the distance in the pitcher’s circle and gave up 14 runs on 10 hits, only seven of which were earned.
While the loss stings, Community is still alive in the Class AA state sectional, which will be played at Bledsoe County Friday evening.
