Viqueens come up short vs. Central Magnet

UNIONVILLE —The Community Viqueens battled the entire game to stay close and take the lead, but the Viqueens could not get over the hump as the Central Magnet Lady Tigers edged the Viqueens 62-60 in a basketball contest Thursday night.
Community (2-3) never led but had a chance to take the win in the final seconds.       
Both teams came out hot in the opening quarter. 
M.J. Simmons led the Viqueens with 10 points, but the Lady Tigers were propelled by three treys and used an 8-0 run to take a 20-14 lead after one quarter. 
The good shooting continued for both squads in the second quarter. 
The Lady Tigers took advantage of offensive rebounds to outscore the Viqueens 17-16.  Haley Mitchell led the Viqueens with seven points as Central Magnet took a 37-30 lead to the intermission.
The Viqueens chipped away at the Lady Tiger lead in the third quarter as Simmons scored eight points. 
Community closed the margin to two at 41-39 before the Lady Tigers went on a 7-0 run.
Central Magnet took a 48-41 lead to the final quarter.
With Shelby Cawthon scoring eight points off the bench and Simmons adding seven, the Viqueens staged a late comeback attempt in the quarter. 
After trailing by five points with 16 seconds left, a Mitchell three-pointer cut the Central Magnet lead to 62-60 with six seconds left. 
After the Lady Tigers missed two free throws with four seconds to play, the Viqueens hurried down court and managed a three-point shot at the buzzer, but the shot missed the mark as the Lady Tigers escaped with the win.
Olivia Hart and Addison Melton scored 20 points each to lead the Lady Tigers.
Simmons scored 28 points and Mitchell added 16 to pace the Viqueens.
Community hosts Eagleville Friday night at 6 p.m.
