Viqueens don’t back down from Cascade

All season long, the Community Viqueens have dominated their schedule, having not lost a single set.

Cascade was the latest team to fall victim to the Viqueens’ 2020 domination on Thursday night, with the Purple and Gold recording their 10th straight shutout victory of the season.

While the final score was lopsided in favor of Community, the Lady Champs fought with a grit and vigor not often seen from a first-year program.

“We can compete with top-level teams. With our new program, we have some mental mistakes we’ll make because we’re young and inexeperienced. Community is a very good team. What I’m excited about is what we can do from here,” Cascade coach Kendall Hampton said.

For the Viqueens, it’s been a core of six seniors that has led to the most dominant run in school history.

“I’m really proud of them. Most of them are seniors, so they’ve been playing together since they were in middle school,” Viqueen coach Tiffany Klages said.

At first glance, the Viqueens dominated Cascade based on the final set scores.

But within each set, the Lady Champions battled through lengthy rally after lengthy rally before the Viqueens’ experience took hold.

For Hampton, her team’s improvements are evident based on more than just the final score from Thursday.

“There were some very long rallies and I know a lot of the teams in our district haven’t given that to them (Community),” she said.

“When we started, we had a lot of errors that were our own. Three or four games ago, we had 18 missed serves. When you lose by three or four, that’s a problem. I want to say tonight, we maybe missed two. We’re making progress in controlling what we can do.”

Community took Set 1 by score of 25-13 and for the majority of the second set, Cascade kept the score within two points until the Viqueens finally wore down Cascade towards the end of the set.

Community won the second set, 25-16 and finished the match with a 25-10 Set 3 victory.

M.J. Simmons led Community with 15 kills, while Halli Smith added six.

Cascade was led by Caroline McKamey, who recorded eight kills against the Viqueens.

Both teams will compete in the Coffee County Southern Slam this weekend before finishing off the regular season slate.

“I keep telling them to play as themselves. We’re heading to a tournament this weekend and see some big competition. I want them to keep playing their hardest,” Klages said.

“I’m excited to see how the next few games go for us,” Hampton added.
