Viqueens rally to win Walking Horse Classic

UNIONVILLE — The Community Viqueens played a total of six games in a span of 29 hours over the weekend and bounced back after a loss in pool play to the Zion Christian Eagles to defeat the Eagles 3-1 and claim the championship of its own Walking Horse Classic.
Community (14-6) started its journey on a chilly Friday afternoon by defeating Cannon County 11-0, but fell for the third time this season to Zion Christian 7-4 in a later pool game.
A frigid Saturday morning greeted the Viqueens as they defeated Mt. Pleasant 12-4 in their first game of the day.
With temperatures warming as the day progressed, Community defeated Culleoka 17-3 and finished pool play with a 3-1 record and the number two seed.
The Viqueens faced Mt. Pleasant in the semifinals of the single elimination round and once again defeated the Lady Tigers 14-4 to create a rematch against the Eagles in the Classic finals.
The Viqueens, playing as the visiting team, took the lead against Zion Christian in the opening inning.
Abbi Murrill was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out single by Carlie Blanton as Community took a 1-0 lead.
Community increased its lead in the second.  A sacrifice bunt by Emma Bentley and another two-out RBI-single, this time by Murrill put the Viqueens up 3-0.
Meanwhile, Viqueen hurler Haley Mitchell pitched out of a bases-loaded first inning jam to preserve the Community lead.
Mitchell walked four and allowed three hits while striking out three as the Eagles could only score a second inning run.
The Viqueen defense backed up its pitcher with a superb defensive effort as Community avenged its earlier loss to the Eagles.
"I was pleased that we adjusted," Coach Cam Farrell of the Viqueens said.  "That's one of the better pitchers that we've seen."
"I had a conversation with the girls and we got in the cage and got to work and was proud of how they responded," Farrell added. "I told them to prepare for it like it's a state game."
Farrell was pleased with the leadership and pitching of Mitchell.
"She is the epitome of leadership," Farrell said.  "She led the team and told her teammates we're not going to lose this game."
Community hosted East Hickman on Monday and will entertain Forrest in a District 7-AA game on Tuesday.
