BELL BUCKLE – The Webb Lady Feet were tied with the Community Viqueens midway through the opening set, but the experience and steady play of the Viqueens took over as Community swept the Lady Feet in three sets Tuesday night in the opening match of the season for both teams.
With social distancing practiced by the players and coaches on the bench along with no-touch celebrations, both teams came out trying to gain the upper hand in the intra-county contest.
Early on, it appeared the Viqueens would run away with the opening set after taking an 8-3 lead.
But after a timeout, the Lady Feet got untracked with the help of some strong serving from Ava Butts and eventually tied the set at 9-9.
A Community timeout stopped the momentum as the Viqueens took a 13-9 lead.
Webb battled back to tie the set at 13-13 before the Viqueen service game took over.
After leading 16-14, Community rode the serving of Halli Smith to capture nine answered points en route to a 25-14 win.
“We had a lot aces,” Coach Tiffany Klages of the Viqueens said. “I’m really proud of them because we’ve worked hard on serving.”
While the service game stayed strong for the Viqueens in the second set, their net play rose to another level.
Jesa Moore and M. J. Simmons provided plenty of kills as Community broke out of a close game and widened its lead.
Smith once again was the server as the Viqueens scored seven straight points and ended the set with a 25-13 win.
Korie Ann Beasley recorded several digs in the third set as Community closed out the match. The Lady Feet maintained several rallies and only trailed 13-10 before the Viqueens used a 6-0 run to go up 21-11. Community ended the match with a 25-13 victory.
“After that second set, we started making plays and getting good sets,” Klages said.
“I’m always happy with a win,” Klages added. “We didn’t how it was going to

end up because we haven’t been able to play yet, but we worked together, pulling it through, and getting the win.”
For Webb Coach Clint Insell, the opening match was the beginning of a work-in-progress for the young Lady Feet.
“Our team is really young. We’ve only got five upperclassmen,” Insell said. “A lot of our problem right now is just confidence and getting used to playing with one another.”
“We’ve got about 11 freshmen,” Insell added. “We’ve got a lot of talent, but we’ve got to put it together.”
The Viqueens will return to action Thursday night in another intra-county matchup as Cascade visits Community for a District 6-A contest at 6 p.m.
Webb follows the script Friday night with another matchup of Bedford County teams as the Lady Feet travel to Shelbyville for a 5 p.m. match.
