SHELBYVILLE – The Community Viqueens had a bit of a lull in the second set, but were steady in their serving and placements the rest of the way as the Viqueens defeated the Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes in straight sets in an intra-county volleyball match Monday night.

Jacey Collier of the Viqueens served the first five points as Community got off to a quick start. Community continued to stretch its lead throughout the set and ended with a 25-11 win.

The Viqueens jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set before the Eaglettes got on a roll.

Anna Parsons of Shelbyville served three consecutive points as the Eaglettes cut the Viqueen lead to 8-6.

Two runs of 4-0 and 3-0 allowed the Eaglettes to tie the set at 10-10 and 14-14.

Collier and Halli Smith helped to right the ship for the Viqueens as Community scored 11 of the final 12 points to win the set 25-15.

Shelbyville took a 4-2 lead in the third set before the Viqueens tied the set at 6-6.

Community used the serving of M. J. Simmons to go up 11-6. The Viqueens used two runs of 4-0 to continue their momentum and finish the match with a 25-11 victory.

The Viqueens were tough at the net and finished with 40 kills.

“We started communicating and everything started falling into place,” Coach Tiffany Klages of the Viqueens said. “Everybody started doing their jobs and it ended up being a good outcome.”

“We usually start doing pretty good in the second set. It takes some time to warm up in the first set,” Coach Caitlin Boleyn of the Eaglettes said. “Our hitting and blocking definitely started looking better.”

“If we can get passes to our setters more often, that will help our hitters out,” Boleyn added. “We need to keep our communication up and not get down on ourselves too early in the game.”

Both teams return to action Tuesday night. Community plays Eagleville in a key District 6-A matchup while the Eaglettes host Lincoln County in a District 8-AAA match.
