UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens used their net play in a big way to defeat the Cascade Lady Champions in straight sets in a District 6-A and intra-county volleyball matchup Thursday night.

The Viqueens collected 28 kills as Community won its second match of the week to start the 2020 season.

Nerves may have played a role for the young Lady Champions in the opening set as the Viqueens jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead.

Cascade was able to cut the Community advantage to 9-5, but the Viqueens used three separate 4-0 runs to win the set 25-9.

The Lady Champions gained some momentum in the second set and were involved in several long rallies. Cascade trailed just 12-9 midway through the set before the setting and subsequent placement of the Viqueen kills came to the forefront. Community used a 3-0 run to go ahead 15-9 and ended the set with a 25-14 win.

“We practice placement a lot,” Viqueen coach Tiffany Klages said. “We have a girl designated to tell our hitters where to put the ball.”

Community did not let up and used a strong service game in set three. The Viqueens scored the first six points before the Lady Champs cut the Community lead to 15-8. It was as close as Cascade would come as the Viqueens scored the final four points to win the set 25-12.

Cascade Coach Kendall Hampton talked about the opening week of play as the Lady Champs played their first two matches in school history.

“It’s been intense for sure,” Hampton said. “I definitely see what we can improve on and what we can work on.”

“I’m glad that this is the first week,” Hampton added. “Now we know what’s the target to prepare for the end of the season which is when I hope we peak anyway.”

“Communication is key,” Klages said. “As long as we’re talking and communicating and know who’s getting the ball and where everybody’s at, then it’s a good outcome.”

Community plays its third straight match against a Bedford County team as the Viqueens visit Shelbyville Central for a 5 p.m. contest Monday.

The Lady Champs host Eagleville Monday in a District 6-A matchup.
