Terence Corrigan joined the Times-Gazette news staff as editor on May 1.

Corrigan comes to the T-G with 30 years of newsroom experience, most recently as the editor of the Marshall County Tribune in Lewisburg.

Before moving to Middle Tennessee, Corrigan was with the White Mountain Independent in Show Low, Arizona, where he served as editor for 15 years.

While at the Arizona newspaper, Corrigan received numerous awards from the Arizona Newspaper Association, including honors for his work to ensure that public records remain accessible. Corrigan was awarded the Freedom of Information award for three consecutive years: 2002, 2003 and 2004. The Valley of the Sun Society of Professional Journalists presented Corrigan with the First Amendment Award in 2001. Under Corrigan's newsroom leadership, the White Mountain Independent placed first in Reporting and Newswriting Excellence in the 2005 Arizona Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Corrigan was selected as Outdoors Writer of the Year by Arizona Game and Fish in 2013 for his "balanced coverage of the reintroduction of the Mexican gray wolf."

Well-rounded life

Before beginning his newspaper career in 1988, Corrigan's work history was diverse. His past employment includes: crewman/ship's engineer on an 80-foot commercial fishing boat off Cape Cod, Massachusetts; one season as a roustabout for a high wire show (the Winn Family Troupe) out of Trail, Oregon; foreign car mechanic; and singer/songwriter and band member (banjo and guitar) with the Ohio Valley String Band in Evansville, Indiana.

"Working as a tradesman for almost 20 years before going into journalism was perfect preparation," Corrigan said. "It developed my ability to understand people from all walks of life, a necessary skill for a journalist.

Telling stories

"Journalism has always been my excuse to go places and hear people's stories and get paid for it," he said.

Corrigan and his wife, Teresa, moved to Middle Tennessee in September 2015 to be near their daughter, Robyn, and granddaughter, Hailey.

"We're excited to have someone with Terry's experience on our team," said William Mitchell, publisher of the T-G. "His passion for community journalism is obvious and infectious."
