It is May and that means it is time for United Way of Bedford County’s annual Mardi Gras Shrimp and Crawfish Boil.
United Way of Bedford County’s annual event, one of two fundraisers for the year, is scheduled for May 20 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Blue Ribbon Circle on the Celebration Grounds.
Tyler Gill returns as the chief cook, preparing the fresh crawfish and shrimp and all of the fixings.
“Tyler receives praise every year for his work,” United Way executive director Mark McGee said. “His cooking is always outstanding, but people who attend our event say he gets better and better each year.”
A new addition to the food lineup will be Cajun alfredo prepared by chef Andrew House and his wife, Ashley, a member of the United Way of Bedford County board of directors, through their Glass Hollow Table & Tavern.
Tyson Foods will provide chicken for those with shellfish allergies. Cherokee Distributing will be providing beer. Water, donated by Vanderbilt Bedford, iced tea and wine will also be available as part of the ticket price.
This year will include both a live auction and a silent auction. The silent auction will feature an extensive array of items from the sports world, local businesses and restaurants.
The list of live auction items is not complete, but already committed are a VIP “A Day in Lynchburg” which includes a special tasting at the Jack Daniel Distillery and lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s, a half-hour golf lesson from former Senior PGA golf pro Buddy Harston at The Vanderbilt Legends Club, a bottle of wine from Arrington Vineyards signed by Kix Brooks, a guest spot on Sports Saturday on WDUC-93.9 “The Duck”, two opportunities to cohost with your own musical theme on Time-to-Time on WDUC-93.9 “The Duck”, handmade fishing lures from Kerry Thompson. Additional items or experiences may be added.
“This is one of our two major fundraisers,” McGee said. “We appreciate the support we have received in past and are hopeful for a large crowd this year.”
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets may be purchased through a United Way board member, First Community Bank, Eventbrite, the United Way of Bedford County website or at the door.
