Champs’ thump Grundy Co. in 7-AA opener

COALMONT — There was plenty of offense to be had in the District 7-AA opener between the Cascade Champions and the Grundy County Yellow Jackets.
Cascade saw 11 players pencil their name in the scoring column, while Grundy County saw nine players score.
Even with both offenses firing, it was Cascade who nearly hit the century mark and blew out Grundy County to open up league play with a 98-67 victory.
From the opening tip-off, Cascade’s game ran through senior Justis Carter, who scored 30 points to lead all scorers.
In the first quarter, six different Champions scored.
Carter knocked down nine to open the frame, while Chance Brown, Thomas Gentry and Jackson Davis all connected from range to balance the Champs in the half-court.
After dropping 29 on Grundy County in the opening frame, Cascade continued to pour on the offense and added a staggering 31 points.
Carter added another nine points in the second quarter, while Lucas Clanton rattled loose for nine of his own, including a pair of 3-pointers.
By halftime, Cascade built a 60-41 advantage.
After the intermission, Cascade went back to work and another five players scored to power an 18-point quarter, while defensively holding the Yellow Jackets to 11 points.
Cascade closed the game on a 20-15 run to preserve the 31-point margin of victory.
Carter’s 30 points led all scorers, while Davis added 16.
Clanton also finished in double figures with 11 points.
Jayden Gulick, Isaac McElroy, Saebyn Burris, Zach Crosslin and Gentry all added six points for the Champs’ efforts as well.
While they were efficient in just about every facet of the offensive game plan, Cascade didn’t work its way to the line a ton, but when they did, they proved efficient as well.
As a team, Cascade went 12-of-13.
Grundy County, but contrast, went just 5-of-7 attempts at the line.
Both teams connected on nine treys in the contest.
Cascade returns to action in district play on Tuesday night at Forrest.
