WINCHESTER — Aided by several Coffee County errors, Shelbyville Central was able to tie the game in the second inning.
But the Eagles were plagued with several errors of their own throughout the final four innings and Coffee County claimed the 9-2 win over Shelbyville, forcing a second game to decide the District 6 4-A championship on Sunday afternoon.
After striking out the first batter he faced, Marquis Wilson had to navigate a little trouble in the first inning, after hitting back-to-back batters.
A Shelbyville error then allowed the Red Raiders to score the first run of the game.
Nolan Jernigan then lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing a second Coffee County run to score in the inning.
The Eagles were able to tie the game in the top of the second inning as Coffee County committed four errors in the inning.
Caleb Molder connected on an infield base hit and safely reached via throwing error, allowing Nick Hopper to score the Eagles’ first run.
Shelbyville tied the game up when Brody Lovvorn scored on a wild pitch.
Following that rough first inning, Wilson regained his composure and sat down seven Red Raider batters in a row until an error gave Coffee County its first base runner since the first inning.
Carter McKenzie then mashed a two-run homer to deep left field, giving the Red Raiders a 4-2 lead.
The district’s top seed then played add on with a run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to force a second game to decide the district championship.
In total, Shelbyville was plagued with six errors, while Coffee County didn’t play much cleaner, committing five.
Wilson helped his own cause and went 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles at the plate.
Nick Johnson and Caleb Molder also singled.
Wilson went 4 1/3 innings on the mound and gave up four runs, only one of which was earned, on two hits while striking out three.
Game 2 of the district championship is set for 3 p.m. in Winchester on Sunday afternoon.
