Bedford County Records Center, just off the square on North Main Street, has a new fresh coat of exterior paint, part of an ongoing effort to improve the storage of county records. The Records Center is operated by the county archives, under the direction of Archivist Carol Roberts.
Improvements to the building are paid from a dedicated fund, created by state law, which is funded by document filing fees in county offices. Past improvements have included a new HVAC system (proper temperatures are important for safe long-term storage) and, just this summer, a new roof. The next improvement will be compact shelving which will increase the building's capacity.
Eventually, the current Juvenile Detention facility, next door to the records center, will be torn down, and the records center will then be one of the first things visitors see as they approach the historic Shelbyville square. Even though the building is for storage and not open to the public, it's important that it look presentable, say county officials.
If you need to search recent records, contact the relevant county office; if you need to search historic records, contact the county Archives' public offices and reading room on the first floor of the historic Bedford County Courthouse on the square, call 931-735-6916 or e-mail archives@bedfordcountytn.gov.
