In the last seven days 533 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Bedford County. The state reports that there were 1,774 tests conducted in the county and 30 percent of those tests resulted in a positive outcome.

On Dec. 13, the state reported that 92 Bedford County residents tested positive for COVID. This was the second highest daily rate, the highest number being 125 on Dec. 7.

In the last seven days, 53,711 Tennesseans tested positive for the viral infection and there were 296,604 tests conducted — a positivity rate of 18 percent. The state positivity rate has stayed right around 18 percent since Dec. 1.

With positivity rates above 5 percent it’s not possible to get an accurate estimate of how widespread the viral infection is. The high rate could be indicative of not enough tests being done or a very high rate of infection.

Since Dec. 1, the deaths of 14 Bedford County residents have been attributed to the coronavirus. Since the pandemic began in early March the deaths of 46 Bedford County residents have been attributed to the coronavirus.

Two Shelbyville nursing homes have been hit hard by the virus. The Waters of Shelbyville has had eight residents die and 41 residents and 20 staff members test positive. The Carriage House has had two residents die and 24 residents and 18 staff members test positive.

Since Dec. 1, 79,542 Tennesseans have tested positive for the virus.

Bedford County continues to have one of the highest rates of infection in the state. Ranked according to the average number of daily cases over the last 14 days, Bedford County has 153 per 100,000 population. The other top seven were Lincoln (205), DeKalb ((197), Cannon and Sequatchie (both with 181), Warren (179), Moore (159), Perry (157).

On Dec. 13, Bedford County had its highest number of active cases since the pandemic began — 552.

According to the state health department, 84 Bedford County school age children (ages 5-18) tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 14 days (from Dec. 1 through Dec. 13).

The number of new hospitalizations in Tennessee in the last 14 days (Nov. 30 through Dec. 13) was 1,104. In the previous 14 days (Nov. 16 through Nov. 29) there were 899 newly hospitalized patients with the coronavirus. That’s an increase of 81.4 percent.

Since the beginning of the pandemic (through Dec. 13) 70 Bedford County residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19.
