Drunk driver crashes into, destroys Unionville donut shop

An intoxicated driver seriously damaged Morning Glory Donuts in Unionville when he ran his vehicle into the rear of the building on Highway 41A North early Wednesday morning.

Robert Matthew Leth, 37, of Cedar River Road in Shelbyville was eastbound on Unionville-Deason Road around 1:50 a.m. when he ran a stop sign at Halls Mill Road and drove completely insude the store, State Trooper Barry Qualls’ report said.

A family member of store co-owner Roscoe Williams said on Facebook he would normally have been inside the store preparing the morning’s donuts. Williams was running late and the store was empty when the accident occurred.

Williams and his wife LaWanda were fulfilling a dream to own his own shop, his daughter posted on GoFundMe.

“He has been baking for over 30 years and it has always been his dream to own his own shop,” Chrissa Holt said on the account she started Wednesday.

“He started off in our home kitchen, renovated a camper truck to use for a donut truck and then opened up a building.

“We were currently leasing the building so unfortunately it will be solely up to the owner to decide if he wants to rebuild. This was my dad’s sole source of income and we no longer operate the donut truck because he donated his truck to another person that wanted to start up their own donut business. This just shows you how much of a loving and giving man my dad truly is. We appreciate any help but we know that God is our provider and he will make a way for us.”

Leth suffered minor injuries, the THP said. He was charged with DUI, running a stop sign and not wearing a seat belt, and held on $2,500 bond at Bedford County Jail.
