WINCHESTER — With bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Shelbyville Central's Nick Hopper stroked a two-run walk-off double down the left field line as the Golden Eagles claimed a 3-2 win over Warren County in the opening round of the District 6 4-A Tournament on Wednesday evening.
"What a win for our team and our program. We definitely made too many mistakes, but our kids played with great heart and grit," Shelbyville Central coach Chase Jones said.
Jaquai Beverly got the start on the mound for the Golden Eagles (15-16) and pitched six strong innings, allowing three hits with six strikeouts and three walks before Carson Williams took over to close out the game and get the win.
"Quai and Carston did a great job on the mound giving us a chance to win it in the bottom of the 10th'" Jones said.
Warren County loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the 10th inning and took the lead off a single to center field, but Kyler Trice made a nice throw to Marquis Wilson, who made a perfect relay throw to catcher Mason Shavers for the tag out at home plate to end the inning.
"On the play where Warren County took the lead in the top of the 10th on a base hit with bases loaded, a perfect relay from Kyler, to Marquis, to Mason was crucial in keeping them from taking a two-run lead," Jones said.
The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning and loaded the bases, setting up Hopper's game-winning hit.
"There is absolutely no one that I could be happier for than Nick Hopper to have come up with an absolute clutch double to knock in the tying and winning run for us," Jones said. "That young man has been through more than anyone should ever have to go through this year. This was an absolute team win by our guys and I could not be more proud of this group of young men."
Hopper added a single while William Bobo collected a double, Beverly ripped three singles with Williams contributing a pair of singles to Shelbyville Central's 10-hit effort.
Baler Molton got the start for the Pioneers and pitched eight strong innings with Alex Tallent pitching the final two frames.
The Eagles will face Franklin County in Winchester on Thursday night at 7.
