The Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes picked up a much needed road district win at Spring Hill on Thursday night, doubling up the Lady Raiders, 43-26.

Sammie Brown led the way for the Eaglettes with a game-high 19 points while Lanaya Young chipped in with 12 of her own. Lily Brown put in eight points with Paige Blackburn rounding out the scoring with seven points and one made three.

Sammie Brown was hot from behind the arc as she finished 5/10 from deep, including 4/5 in the second half, picking up the outside shooting slack from her teammate’s Blackburn struggles.

Meanwhile, Lanaya Young, after finishing with only two points in a very low scoring first half saw Central hold onto a 19-15 halftime lead after they led 6-3 to start the second quarter.

However, in the second half, the defensive intensity and pressure from the visitors ended up holding Spring Hill to eight points TOTAL, including only five in the fourth quarter. Shelbyville didn’t really get going offensively until the fourth, as they entered the final frame with a narrow 24-18 lead, but Sammie Brown hit two threes, Blackburn hit another, and Young scored 10 of her 12 points in the final eight minutes to eventually put away the hosts, 46-23

Shelbyville Central is hoping to use the inspired defensive performance to springboard their way into a favorable seed for the upcoming district tournament as they look to qualify for the region tournament, but they still have work to do offensively, especially when Paige Blackburn is held to seven points on 3/15 shooting, including starting the game 1/12 through the first three quarters.

Spring Hill falls to 10-13 (2-4) and are scheduled to hit the road to Columbia Central on Friday as district play rolls on.

Shelbyville Central improves to 13-8 (2-4) and are set to host Lincoln County in an absolutely crucial district matchup on Friday night, LIVE on WLIJ 98.7 and AM 1580 starting at 5:45 p.m.
