Early deficit proves costly for Lady Champs

BELL BUCKLE — Despite a late effort in an attempt to turn the tide of the game, the Cascade Lady Champions ultimately couldn’t erase an early five-run deficit to defeat the Blackman Blaze and fell 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Down 5-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Champions desperately needed to build some momentum at the plate to make a comeback.
With a pair of doubles to open the half inning, they did just that.
Kyndal Bolden led off the frame with a hard line drive to left-center field for a double – her first hit of the game – and Christina Bilbro followed it up with a double of her own to score Bolden to make it a 5-1 game.
Two at-bats later, Claire Perry singled to move Bilbro to third, and Caitlin Fannin followed with a hard ground ball to shortstop to score Bilbro on a fielder’s choice.
The next two Lady Champion batters struck out to end the inning with a score of 5-2.
Cascade (7-13) made quick work of the Blaze (15-18) in the top of the seventh inning with only four batters seeing at-bats, but they weren’t able to keep their momentum rolling as they went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half to end the game.
While Blackman only notched a lone triple in the opening frame, they were able to score two runs on the two-out knock as Horn had previously hit a batter and walked another.
Cascade couldn’t find their rhythm at the plate early in the game, and didn’t record a hit until Horn knocked a double in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Blaze capitalized on that by putting up another two spot in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead without recording a hit in the frame.
An inning later they added their final run of the game on an RBI-single to make it 5-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Cascade recorded three straight outs to get out of the top of the fourth with minor damage as Horn fanned the final two batters.
Horn totaled five strikeouts on the night while walking eight and allowing three hits.
The Lady Champions were back in action on Monday night against the Cannon County Lionettes for their final regular season game before the District 7-AA tournament starts next week.
