The death of Jane Seely Burton, 95, of Burns Road in Shelbyville, Tenn., occurred peacefully Wednesday, June 21, 2023, under the loving care and comfort of her family and the professional and caring staff at The Waters Health Care Nursing Center.

She was born May 5, 1928 in Boston, Mass., daughter of the late Henry Morris Seely and Gertrude Noble Seely. She was the wife of the late Joseph Lewis (Lew) Burton. Ms. Burton grew up in Montclair, N.J., and graduated from Montclair High School.

After raising four children, she began the process of turning her passion for breeding and showing miniature and standard poodles into a successful pet care and grooming business, which she named Daisey Doggery. Opening first in Aiken, S.C., and then moving to West Palm Beach, Fla., the business grew into two successful locations.

In 1987 at the age of 59, Ms. Burton decided to sell her grooming business and pursue her long held dream of becoming a nurse. She entered the Practical Nursing Program of the Department of Vocational-Technical Education, Palm Beach State College, Fla., receiving her degree and her LPN license in 1989.

As a nurse, she specialized in working with Geriatric patients in home healthcare settings. She continued in the nursing field after moving to Shelbyville, Tenn., to be closer to her family and retired from nursing in 2008 at the age of 79.

After retirement, Ms. Burton lived with her daughter and maintained her many friendships developed over the years. She greatly enjoyed making new friendships as well as participating in the social activities of the Red Hat Society in Shelbyville. Over the last several years, she often expressed how much she appreciated the wonderful care she received from the home healthcare nurses who visited her each day to help her family care for her.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ms. Burton was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Seely Stanard; her brother, Robert Noble Seely; and by her oldest daughter, Barbara Burton Coppola.

Survivors include her youngest daughter, Nancy Burton of Shelbyville; two sons, David Burton (wife Maurine) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Stephen Burton (wife Heather) of Richmond Hill, Ga.; and a grandson, Alexander Burton of Murfreesboro, as well as many nieces and nephews.

There will be no formal services at this time. Interment will be at South Lawn Cemetery in Aiken, S.C. Feldhaus Memorial Chapel of Shelbyville will be assisting the family with the arrangements.
