Lady Champs open Classic with big win

MURFREESBORO — On Thursday night in their first game of the Riverdale Warrior Classic, the Cascade Lady Champions made quick work of Saks (Ala.) in five innings, defeating the visitors 12-2.
Nine different Lady Champs connected for hits in the game, with Vera Bilbro, Lani Jones and Sophie Ray doubling in the win.
After a scoreless first inning, Cascade was able to knock in four runs in the bottom of the second inning and stretched its lead to 6-0 with a two-spot in the bottom of the third.
A six-run fourth inning put the game into the 10-run rule limit range.
Caitlin Fannin went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, while Bilbro went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
Addison Pope got the nod in the pitcher’s circle and went the distance to claim the win for the Lady Champions.
She gave up six hits, but allowed just two runs to cross the plate, only one of which was earned.
She struck out four against six hits.
Cascade continued play in the Warrior Classic over the weekend, however results were unavailable at press time.
