Midnight intruder points BB gun at man

A trespasser allegedly pointed a BB gun at a man who had been sleeping inside Supreme Auto Sales, Madison Street, early Tuesday.

The victim told police he heard a “banging” noise outside around 2:45 a.m., responded by hitting a door, looked outside and saw a man pointing a gun at him.

Officer Darrian Lanier and Sgt. Tory Moore found Joseph Rodger Hedrick, 40, of Deer Point Road walking along Madison Street moments later with an unloaded metal BB gun in his clothing. Hedrick allegedly said he had been told to “clear” the building by someone he refused to name, and was checking a nearby vehicle to ensure no one was inside.

Hedrick was charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespassing and attempted auto burglary and held on $17,000 bond.

**Competing panhandlers

An argument broke out Monday between two people Shelbyville police said were “begging” on a street corner.

William Charles Brinkley, 48, who police said is homeless, allegedly demanded that another beggar share the corner of Fairfield Pike and Castle Street (the rear entrance to Kroger) with him.

The other beggar, a woman, told police Brinkley threatened to kill her.

Brinkley’s actions caught the attention of passersby as Officer Michael Taylor talked to the woman. Lt. Kevin Roddy of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office said Brinkley “shot birds” at and antagonized the woman while a passing driver told Officer Jerry Draine that Brinkley tossed a needle into nearby grass.

Brinkley was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication. He was held on $1,000 bond.

**Scam attempts

Two more types of scam attempts have hit the Bedford County area.

Several people have received calls from people claiming to be a TBI agent. The caller tells the recipient a car and apartment have been leased in their name in Texas and a large amount of drugs found, federal warrants has been issued for their arrest and they must withdraw all money from bank accounts.

The caller requests personal information and asks for money.

Police say the calls are originating from New Jersey but falsely show up on phones as from local law enforcement agencies.

Others are being told by scammers they’ve been awarded a $1,000 U.S. Treasury Department check and must supply banking information to receive the money.
