A work crew from the Tennessee Department of Transportation inspect a sinkhole that formed early Friday afternoon in the right westbound lane of U.S. 41A just west of Rippy Ridge Road across from Shipman’s Creek Road. “There’s nothing under there,” a member of the TDOT crew said. A close look revealed empty space under the edges of the sinkhole where gravel had once been. The portion of U.S. 41A around Rippy Ridge has been plagued with problems as far back as the 1970s.
