CORNERSVILLE — Aside from a two-run third inning, the Community Vikings played Cornersville evenly the rest of the way.
But that two-run differential was the difference on Monday night as the Bulldogs matched the Vikings at the plate down the stretch in the 7-5 win over Community.
The Bulldogs grabbed the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run double, and that lead held through the following two innings.
Community went to work in the top of the fifth and it was back-to-back RBI doubles by Corey Paterick and Mason Russell that gave Community a 3-2 lead.
James Beech ground out to first, but scored Russell from third for a 4-2 Community lead.
But as quickly as the Vikings grabbed the lead, Cornersville struck right back and plated four in the bottom of the inning to re-take the lead, 6-4, by the end of the fifth.
A ground ball RBI single by Russell in the sixth brought Community within one run, but again, Cornersville answered and plated a run in the bottom of the frame.
Paterick and Russell led the Vikings at the plate, each knocking in a pair with a double, while Maki Fleming and Drew Harris both went 2-for-3.
On the mound, Blaine Paschal got the start and went 3 1/3 innings on the bump, giving up just two runs on two hits while striking out six.
Corey Paterick worked two innings in relief and gave up four runs on five hits while striking out three.
