Vikings hope to rebound at Moore Co.

After opening game mistakes and penalties proved costly for the Community Vikings in a 36-6 loss to the Cornersville Bulldogs last Friday in their season opener, the Vikings will be looking to correct those errors on the road Thursday night against the Moore County Raiders.

With the threat of impending rain, the game has been moved from Friday to Thursday.

"Penalties killed us quite a bit," Coach Chris Grooms of the Vikings said. "You can't help the other team by making silly mistakes."

The Vikings looked to cut into the Bulldog lead late in the first half with the help of three first down passes from quarterback Dallas Grooms, but Community could not put points on the scoreboard.

"We opened up because we were trying to run our 2-minute drill," Grooms said. "We were having some success."

"Without 7-on-7s, I was kind of nervous about going wide open," Grooms added.

The Vikings were successful on a 30-yard jet pass from Grooms to John Stanley for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Despite one less day of practice, the Vikings were able to get some necessary work done.

"This week we fixed our penalty situation and just made sure everybody knew how to do their job," Grooms said.

"We simplified it so everybody's got their job and they're not trying to do somebody else's job," Grooms added.

Senior McCade Miller of the Vikings discussed some of the work done in preparation for the Raiders.

"We looked at a lot of the things that they run and made some adjustments in our secondary," Miller said.

"Overall, we didn't do too bad, but there was some stuff we had to work on," Miller added.

"I think we'll bounce back this week. We definitely had a lot to look at yesterday watching film. It was good to see everything that we did," Miller said.

Grooms and the Vikings found out on Tuesday their game had been moved up one day.

"It changes it a little bit. But we got our work in," Grooms said.

The Raiders are coming off a 15-0 shutout over Cascade in their season opener.

"They run a lot of what we run," Grooms said. "They have a spread that Coach White put it with their athletes."

"They're a typical Moore County team. They're going to play downhill and they're going to hit you," Grooms added.

The game against Moore County is the first of five consecutive games on the road.

"I enjoy being on the road. There's less headaches as far as getting everything set up," Grooms said.

Game time on Thursday night is 7 p.m.
