UNIONVILLE – The Community Vikings scored the first two goals of the game and withstood a Zion Christian Eagle score late as the Vikings defeated the Eagles 2-1 in a non-district soccer matchup Tuesday.
Community (2-3-1) had several close misses throughout the game.
The Vikings could not put the ball in the net on a breakaway in the first few minutes of the contest and had a narrow miss on a direct kick before Randy Anica broke the ice 24 minutes into the game.
Anica made a nifty move in front of the goal and used his left leg to find the right side of the net as the Vikings took a 1-0 first half lead.
The Vikings had two close chances the remainder of the half as a shot hit the post and another attempt was just wide of the net as Community took its 1-0 lead into the intermission.
A Viking header went just wide as the second half started before the Eagles were guilty of a handball in front of the goal.
Anica made the resulting penalty kick as Community increased its lead to 2-0 with 27:25 remaining.
The Eagles scored their first goal with 9:35 left to cut the Viking lead to 2-1.
The Viking defense kept the Eagles in check the rest of the way as Community preserved its lead and took the win.
