CHARLOTTE — After hanging tough at Creek Wood in the first half, the Lady Red Hawks got big production from Alessia Nesbitt and pulled away for the 52-44 win over the Viqueens.
Creek Wood jumped out to an early 11-6 lead after the first quarter, with the Viqueens connecting on just three shots from the floor in the opening frame.
Trailing by five, Community started connecting from range in the second period and was able to storm back and tie the game at 18 by halftime.
Haley Mitchell hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter and M.J. Simmons provided the efforts in the paint as Community outscored Creek Wood, 12-7, in the second quarter.
While four different Viqueens scored in the third quarter, Creek Wood charged ahead with a 16-point effort, including six more by Laura Nichols.
The hosts finished the game with 18 points to secure the eight-point victory, despite a valiant Viqueen effort from the perimeter.
Of the team’s seven treys, Community connected on four in the final frame and chipped in 15 points.
In the end, Simmons led the Viqueens with 14 points, while Mitchell added 13.
Nesbitt led all scorers with 19 points, while Nichols added 13 for the winners.
Community will look to bounce back on Friday afternoon at Forrest as the Viqueens open District 7-AA play.
