UNIONVILLE – Going into Tuesday’s District 6-A showdown with the Eagleville Lady Eagles, the Community Viqueens had not lost a set in their first three matches of the season.
Community never took the foot off the pedal as the Viqueens used their steady play to keep their streak intact with a sweep of the Lady Eagles.
The Viqueens were ready from the outset as M. J. Simmons turned a block into a winner on the very first point of the match. With several kills and excellent placements, Community (4-0, 2-0 D6A) took its biggest lead of the opening set at 18-11.
The Lady Eagles scored three straight points to cut the Viqueen margin, but Community used the serving of Halli Smith to go on a 4-0 run late and won the set 25-16.
“Starting the set is very important,” Coach Tiffany Klages of the Viqueens said. “A good kill or a block or an ace sets the tone for the rest of the set.”
Community led 11-6 in the second set, but Eagleville stepped up its game with effective serving and placements to close the gap. The Lady Eagles cut the Viqueen advantage to 15-14, but Community used kills and blocks at the net to open up a 21-16 lead. Eagleville cut the margin to two points late before the Viqueens closed out the set to win 25-21.
The Viqueens held a 13-9 lead in the third set, but the Lady Eagles continued to battle. Eagleville led 21-20, but the Viqueens would not be denied. Community scored three consecutive points and took a 24-23 lead. The Viqueens ended the match with a block that went off an Eagleville defender for the 25-23 win.
“They all played great as a team, communicated, and executed,” Klages said. “They all did their jobs very well.”
Community returns to district action Thursday with a home matchup against Culleoka at 6 p.m.
