UNIONVILLE — After leading by seven at halftime, the Community Viqueens warmed up with 23 third-quarter points and coasted the rest of the way as the Viqueens increased their winning streak to five by defeating the Fairview Lady Jackets 58-37 in a non-district basketball contest Tuesday night.
Community (15-7, 3-0) used the hot hand of Haley Mitchell to gain the early advantage.  Mitchell scored the first seven Viqueen points as Community took an 11-4 lead to the second quarter.
The Viqueens found success from the inside as M. J. Simmons scored eight of the 10 Community points in the quarter.  The Lady Jackets stayed within striking range by scoring 10 points of their own as the Viqueens took a 21-14 lead into halftime.
"We gave up some offensive rebounds the first half, so I challenged them to clean up the rebounding,” Viqueen coach Cody Pierce. "We did, and limited their shots in the second half."
Mitchell and Simmons combined for 17 points as the Viqueens scored early and often in the third quarter.  Mitchell drilled two treys as Community increased its lead to 44-26 heading to the final quarter.
"Big quarters like that really help out," Pierce said. "It makes things easier on both sides and it's nice to get those quarters."
Reserves saw playing time in the final quarter for the Viqueens as six Community players contributed points.
The Viqueens outscored Fairview 14-11 to finish with their 21-point win.
Mitchell scored 22 points to lead the Viqueens while Simmons finished with 19.
Kaycie Mullens led Fairview with 11 points.
The Viqueens were 10-of-14 at the free throw line while the Lady Jackets were 9-of-11.
"We turned the ball over early, but we settled in and started running some good offense and got some good looks," Pierce said.
"Our defense played pretty solid all night. I feel like we gave up a few easy shots, but overall a pretty good effort on both sides," Pierce added.
Pierce praised the play of his reserves in the final quarter.
"It was nice to get some players out there that don't play a whole lot," Pierce said. "They did a good job defending and getting some good looks on offense."
Community travels to Cascade for an intra-county District 7-AA battle Friday night.
