Wins turn to loss over stolen lottery tickets

An employee charged with stealing lottery tickets from a Shelbyville store told police she won approximately $1,000.
Desiree Ann Wilhoite, 21, of Landers Street was arrested Tuesday on three counts of lottery fraud.
A manager at Discount Tobacco Outlet, South Cannon Boulevard, told Officer James Sharp their audits of lottery tickets had begun coming up short. Checks of security videos showed Wilhoite taking the tickets, the manager said.
Footage shows Wilhoite removing tickets from the counter, scratching the bar codes to see if they were winners, and taking them with her as she left without paying, Sharp said.
A total of 254 tickets worth $3,465.11 were taken, the report said.
Wilhoite admitted to Sharp and Officer Benjamin Cobb she began stealing tickets Friday, Dec. 9. She allegedly cashed the winning tickets at another store.
Bedford County Jail records show Wilhoite was released on $1,500 bond.
Bike recovered
A Mongoose bicycle stolen from a Regent Drive residence last Saturday was recovered by police Tuesday.
The mother of the bicycle’s owner stopped by police headquarters Tuesday and said she’d just seen it being ridden by the nearby Marathon convenience store on North Cannon Boulevard. Officers found the rider and bicycle moments later at the Goodwill store. The rider turned the bicycle over to officers and admitted the theft. The owner’s mother chose not to press charges.
Meth discovered
Methamphetamine was found inside a vehicle after the driver was stopped for a non-functional taillight Tuesday on Madison Street, police said.
Amber N. Rodgers, 35, of Halls Mill Road was allegedly very nervous during the traffic stop, leading Officer Jeremiah Guinn to request a search.
Guinn said he found 0.9 grams of crystal meth inside her purse.
Rodgers was charged with possession of a schedule 2 drug, driving on a suspended license and violation of the vehicle light law. She was held on $3,000 bond.
Phone deal
Two suspects have been paying others $30 apiece in exchange for accompanying them and allowing their personal information to be used in iPhone purchases at area stores, police were told.
The “borrowed” information is being used to buy phones at the AT&T store in Tullahoma, Verizon in Tullahoma and Walmart in Shelbyville.
Two women whose information was used said they’d given the suspects names of many other possible recruits. They said the suspects had offered to pay them $30 for everyone they could get to accompany them then purchasing the phones.
No one had been charged as of Wednesday.
Lock box entered
An estimated $4,000 was stolen from a lock box at an Anthony Lane home between 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, police were told.
No signs of forced entry were found, the police report said.
