SUMMERTOWN, Tenn. – The Cascade Champions (15-11, 4-4) came out with a more inspired effort early on, but ultimately succumbed to the No. 10 ranked Summertown Eagles (19-5, 6-2), 67-58, in District 9-AA play on Friday night.
Cascade was unable to slow down Summertown’s Lleyton Sherman as he finished with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from downtown. Andrew Mabry added 15 points, and Ryder Blackwood chipped in with 10 points for the Eagles.
Meanwhile, Henry Stone scored a team-high 16 points on the night to go along with six rebounds, Kaleb Kelso added 15 points, and Tyler Rodgers finished with an energetic 14 points with four steals.
Early on, Summertown was hot from the jump, but Cascade managed to stay within four, 18-14, at the end of the opening period. In the second stanza, the Champions still trailed by just five points, 29-24, after Stone’s buzzer-beating putback layup heading into the halftime locker room.
Coming out for the second half, Cascade cut the lead to just three points, 44-41, before Lleyton Sherman provided a backbreaking three-pointer from NBA range to beat the buzzer at the end of the third quarter, sending Summertown into the final frame with a 47-41 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Cascade struggled to keep pace offensively, and the Eagles managed to pull away late by outscoring the Champions, 20-17, en route to the nine-point victory.
The Champions fall to 15-11 overall. No. 3 seed Cascade will take on No. 2 seed Summertown in the District 9-AA semifinals on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Bell Buckle, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400.
