Golden Eagles Lose To Summit in Homecoming Heartbreaker

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – After taking a five-point lead with just 34 seconds remaining against the visiting Summit Spartans (2-4, 1-2), the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (1-5, 0-4) gave up a six-play, 77-yard touchdown drive, culminating in a 21-yard touchdown pass to the 6’4 wideout in Micah Sally with three seconds left to leave the Eagles’ Nest in shock on Friday night with a 20-19 victory.

“We gave ourselves a chance,” Golden Eagles’ Head Coach Jud Dryden said, “ We just had to make a tackle inbounds. If we tackle them once inbounds then the clock goes. It’s tough.”

For Summit, Sally finished with eight receptions for 142 yards and all three Spartan touchdowns, and he was able to out-jump two Golden Eagles in the end zone on the final play to steal the win for the visitors.

Shelbyville Central put together an impressive scoring march of their own to take the lead late, tallying up a 12-play, 71-yard touchdown drive that took 6:19 off the clock, culminating in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Cyonn Rucker to Laron Brown on a wheel route out of the backfield. Brown hauled in the perfect pass at the two-yard line before breaking a tackle while managing to tip-toe inbounds just long enough to cross the pylon and take a 19-14 lead with 34 seconds to go.

“We got back to who we are [on Shelbyville’s go-ahead drive], we settled in, and we moved the football,” Dryden said, “We relied on our offensive line and our running back stable until we had a good chance to take a shot.”

Early on, both teams traded punts before trading turnover-on-downs. However, early in the second quarter, Shelbyville Central forced the first of two turnovers on the night, poking the ball free from Zach Lamb and recovering the fumble to set up its offense with good field position at its own 44-yard line. Five plays later, Torrion Mathis scored his first touchdown since returning from a Week One injury on a 27-yard scamper to the end zone to take a 6-0 lead with 7:38 left in the first half after the PAT was blocked. Mathis finished with nine carries for 60 yards and the one touchdown on the ground.

On Summit’s ensuing possession, the Golden Eagles would force the Spartans into a 4th-and-11 at the Shelbyville Central 26-yard line. The visitors opted to go for it, and the Golden Eagles called an all-out blitz, resulting in Cyonn Rucker picking off the Davis Smith pass with 2:26 to go in the second quarter, ensuring that Shelbyville Central would take a 6-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

Coming out for the third quarter, Summit took the ball and drove 59 yards for the go-ahead score. The Spartans overcame a holding penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, using eight plays to travel 59 yards in 3:46. On 3rd-and-23 from the Shelbyville Central 32-yard line, Smith scrambled around a bit before heaving a prayer towards the end zone that his receiver, Sally, somehow managed to come down with to give the visitors a 7-6 lead with 8:14 to go in the third quarter.

Both teams traded scoreless possessions before Shelbyville Central re-took the lead. Hudson Oaks came in at quarterback, delivering a screen pass to Cyonn Rucker. Rucker made the first man miss with a juke move, and then turned on the afterburners to outrun every Spartan angle down the right sideline to reach the end zone on a 66-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 52 seconds left in the third period. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, but Shelbyville Central still led 12-7.

The two sides traded punts, and then Summit once again found a long touchdown after a 15-yard penalty. On 1st-and-25 from the Golden Eagles’ 44-yard line, Smith dropped back to pass and launched the ball down the left sideline, allowing Sally to make an incredible snag while managing to keep his balance and run into the end zone. Summit kicked the extra point instead of going for two, holding onto a 14-12 lead with 7:00 to go in the fourth quarter.

Then, Shelbyville Central put together its best drive of the game at the best possible time. Getting the ball at its own 29-yard line with 6:53 to go, the Golden Eagles looked like they were going to have to punt the ball away on 4th-and-8 at their own 41-yard line. Instead, Summit ran into the kicker, and Rucker slithered his way for four yards and a first down to give Shelbyville Central new life.

The Golden Eagles kept moving the ball on the ground, reaching the Summit 27-yard line as the clock ticked under a minute to go. That’s when Rucker lofted a perfect pass to Laron Brown, and Brown found a way to reach the end zone to give the hosts their short-lived 19-14 lead with 34 seconds to go.

After Summit’s final scoring drive to win the game, Davis Smith finished 17-of-29 passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns – all to Micah Sally – with one interception. Rucker went 3-of-6 for 57 yards and one touchdown through the air, tallied nine rushes for 31 yards, and also had one catch for 66 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground for Shelbyville Central, Treyvion Mathis finished as the leading rusher with 67 yards on 15 attempts. Torrion Mathis had nine carries for 60 yards and a touchdown while Laron Brown went for 22 yards on nine carries. The Golden Eagles defense held Summit to just 80 yards rushing on the night.

Shelbyville Central drops its fifth-consecutive game, falling to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in Region 6-6A play. The Golden Eagles are on a bye this upcoming week, followed by Senior Night against non-region foe Clarksville on Thursday, Oct. 8th.
