Eaglettes Survive Seesaw Affair With Warren County to Clinch Third Place in D9-AAAA

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The 3-seed Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes (16-10, 6-4) had to dig deep to fend off the 4-seed Warren County Lady Pioneers (9-22, 5-5) in the District 9-AAAA Consolation Game, 51-49, on Monday inside of Rick Insell Gymnasium.

Trinity Reynolds led all scorers with 24 points for Warren County, including nine points in the fourth quarter. Addison Steakley was the only other Lady Pioneer to reach double-figures, scoring 14 points on the night and connected on a pair of three-pointers.

Jada Berry led the Eaglettes with a team-high 18 points. Lanaya Young got back to her scoring ways with 15 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off a late charge by Warren County. She totaled nine points in the fourth. Janiya Leslie was the other Eaglette to reach double-digit points with 12, including knocking down a trio of triples.

Free-throw shooting helped decide the outcome with Warren County shooting 58% (10-17) from the line while Shelbyville shot 76% (13-17). 

To start, Berry scored six points to lead all scorers in the first quarter as Shelbyville jumped out to an 11-8 lead. Leslie tacked on a three, and Young added a two-point field goal.

In the second quarter, Warren County came back to tie the game by halftime at 22, outscoring Shelbyville, 14-11. Leslie connected on her second three and Berry put in four points, but Reynolds and Steakley combined for 13 of the 14 points scored by the Lady Pioneers. 

Coming out for the second half, both teams continued going back and forth with Reynolds scoring six more points in the period while Steakley added seven to lead the Lady Pioneers to a 36-34 lead at the end of the third quarter. Shelbyville had three of their four missed free throws in the period as Berry and Young each scored four points in the third. 

In the final frame, Reynolds and Young dueled once again with each of them scoring nine points in the quarter. Fortunately for the Eaglettes, they held Steakley scoreless while Leslie knocked down her third three of the game while Berry added four more points as Shelbyville outscored Warren County, 17-13, to pull out the heart-stopping 51-49 win.

Shelbyville will travel to District 10-AAAA Runners-up Page for the Region 5-AAAA Quarterfinal on Friday night, LIVE on WLIJ 98.7 and AM 1580 starting at 6:45 p.m.
