MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (3-0-0) defeated Alabama A&M (0-3-0) 2-0 on Thursday night in the 11th all-time meeting between the programs.
The Blue Raiders extended their unbeaten start to 3-0, their best opening stretch since 2015.
Senior forward Taijah Fraser put the Blue Raiders ahead late in the first half, finishing a pass from junior forward/midfielder Hannah Murphy. In the 66th minute, freshman Scottie Newton extended the Blue Raiders' advantage, netting her first collegiate goal on a header off a corner from senior defender Hannah Delaney on a set piece. Goalkeeper Demi Gronauer (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) registered two saves in 90 minutes.
Coach Aston Rhoden on Newton's impact:
Everybody here has a responsibility when they have the opportunity to finish the game for us, and that's what Scottie did.
Newton on her goal:
I had a good feeling going into the box. I was very confident on the ball. I couldn't have done it without that amazing pass; I just placed it over the net.
By the Numbers:
Newton scored her first collegiate career goal.
Fraser tallied her second goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
