UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – The Community Vikings (7-3) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end in a 61-59 (OT) loss to the Clay County Bulldogs (4-4) on Friday night.
The Vikings shot an abysmal 5/18 from the free throw line, including 2/12 in the second half alone, while the Bulldogs finished 9/11 at the charity stripe overall and 5/6 at the line in overtime.
Community had no answer for Nolan Adams for much of the night as he finished with a game-high 28 points, including 17 in the first half alone. Cole Eads joined his teammate in double-figures with 17 points.
Meanwhile, Charlie Haskins led the Vikings with a team-high 22 points, Jonathan Lawwel and Josh Powers each added 11 points, and Jaxon Williams chipped in with 10 points. Community was also held to just two three-pointers on the night while the Bulldogs nailed six.
Early on, Haskins and Powers looked unstoppable for the hosts, scoring eight points apiece as the Vikings added an old-fashioned three-point play from Williams to take a 19-12 lead at the end of one. Adams scored eight points while Eads added five in the period for Clay County.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs exploded for 19 points that came solely from the duo of Eads and Adams. The former connected on a pair of threes and finished with 10 in the period while the latter scored the other nine while nailing another triple. Meanwhile, Haskins led Community with seven more points to bring his first-half total to 15 while Powers made the only regulation three-pointer for the Vikings. Clay County took a 36-35 lead heading into the halftime locker room.
In the third quarter, Community managed to tie the game at 45 heading into the final frame despite going 2/6 from the foul line, seemingly foreshadowing what was to come in the next eight minutes.
In that fourth quarter, the Vikings managed to hold Adams scoreless, but offensively the hosts could not buy a free throw. They went 0/6 in the quarter – including Haskins missing all four of his attempts – and the Bulldogs took advantage when Eads tied the game at 51 with 8.1 seconds to go.
During the extra session, Adams found his rhythm again, opening the overtime by hitting Clay County’s sixth three-pointer of the night following a pair of free throws by teammate Aayden Cherry.
Lawwel scored five of his 11 points in the period while Williams added a three-pointer, but Haskins was saddled to the bench with five fouls and the Vikings ultimately were unable to salvage a win in overtime.
Community falls to 7-3. It doesn’t get any easier for the Vikings, as they are scheduled to host Eagleville on Tuesday night to complete the season series.
