FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (9-4, 2-1) registered just two base hits in a 7-2 District 6-AAAA defeat at Lincoln County (13-5, 1-2) on Monday night.
The Golden Eagles worked six walks and were hit by four other pitches, but just could not come up with a big hit outside of Ashton Whorley’s 2-RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. Ian Weaver got the start and picked up the win for the Falcons, lasting 4.0 innings and giving up just the two runs on two hits and five walks with four strikeouts on 88 pitches. Rhett Persell came on in relief for the final 3.0 innings, shutting out the Golden Eagles’ offense and giving up just two baserunners – one via walk and another via HBP – while striking out six batters on 56 pitches.
With Stephen Bobo still out with an injury, Kaleb Maillet (3-1) got the start on the mound for Shelbyville Central and took his first loss of the season. His final line was 4.1 innings pitched with four runs – three earned – on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts and one home run on 101 pitches. Elijah Westbrooks came on in relief, getting the final five outs while giving up three earned runs on four hits and one walk with one strikeout and a home run on 34 pitches.
After Lincoln County took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, neither team scored again until the Golden Eagles took their only lead of the night in the top of the fourth inning. Case Davis was first hit by a pitch before Brody Thomas came up with a base hit, and then Ashton Whorley’s 2-RBI single plated both runners and put the visitors ahead, 2-1.
Lincoln County responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and then plated two more in the fifth to knock Maillet from the game before tacking on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the Falcons’ first district win of the season.
Ian Weaver was the heavy hitter for Lincoln County, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Persell also had a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.
For the Golden Eagles, Whorley finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a walk while Brody Thomas went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a HBP.
Shelbyville Central attempts to split the series at home on Tuesday night with first-pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
