MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Coming off of a 59-52 home defeat to Warren East on Saturday, the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles took another close loss, this time on the road, against the Siegel Stars on Monday, 52-46.
Siegel’s Carter Webb was unstoppable in the second half, taking over to score 19 of his game-high 23 points after the intermission. The Stars also shot 25 free throws compared to Shelbyville just taking two, finishing 16/25 at the charity stripe to help keep the Golden Eagles within striking distance. Dorien Lyles was the only other Star to reach double-figures in scoring, finishing with 12 points. Lawson Lee and James Ruffner scored nine points and eight points, respectively, as Siegel finished the game with only four players registering points.
Shelbyville’s Tae’Shawn Shelton led the way with a team-high 17 points, including 10 points in the first quarter and seven points in the fourth quarter. Jevon Lee was the only other Golden Eagle to join Shelton with double-digit points, putting in 12 points of his own, including six in the third quarter.
Once again, starting guard Jordan Taylor was stuck battling foul trouble all night long, finishing with four personal fouls and just six points.
In the first quarter, Shelton’s fast start propelled Shelbyville to a 14-8 lead as the junior forward single-handedly outscored the Stars in the period. However, Siegel answered in the second quarter, holding Shelton scoreless and Shelbyville to just six points as a team as the Stars trimmed the deficit to just two points, 20-18, going into the halftime locker room.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the third quarter saw Siegel explode for 21 points, outscoring Shelbyville, 21-11, to flip the game and take a 39-31 lead going into the final frame. Carter Webb was the main one responsible for the barrage, scoring 14 points in the third quarter alone as the Golden Eagles could not contain the Siegel guard.
In the fourth quarter, Shelbyville tried to make one last late rally, but they ultimately fell short despite outscoring Siegel, 15-13, to fall 52-46 on the night.
Siegel improves to 5-3 on the season.
Shelbyville falls to 5-6 on the year. They are scheduled to return home to play Tullahoma on Tuesday night, LIVE on WLIJ 98.7 and AM 1580 starting at 5:45 p.m.
