Golden Eagles Finish 5-0 in Mid-South Classic as Bobo Returns From Injury

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – Last week, the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (14-4, 2-2) went a perfect 5-0 in the Mid-South Classic against the Hubbard Eagles (OH), the Lebanon Tigers (IN), the Heritage Christian Eagles (IN), the Van Buren Black Knights (OH), and the Alexandria-Monroe Tigers (IN). 

In the first game on Thursday against Hubbard (2-4), the Golden Eagles put together a 13-3 run-rule victory after five innings. Brody Thomas got the start on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings while giving up two runs – one earned – on one hit and four walks with seven strikeouts on 79 pitches. Braxton Vari pitched the final inning, giving up one earned run on two hits and one strikeout on 17 pitches.

Shelbyville Central scored one run in the first before Hubbard scored two in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Golden Eagles then got those two runs back in the home half, then plated five runs in the third before scoring two in the fourth and three more in the fifth. 

At the plate, Miles McCullough went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, and one RBI, Blake Bone finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, and Elijah Westbrooks drew a pair of walks. Case Davis went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two walks, Brody Thomas finished 2-for-4, Caden Peacock went 0-for-1 with an RBI and a HBP, and Stephen Bobo returned as the DH and batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Ashton Whorley went 1-for-2 with one RBI and a walk, and Braxton Vari finished 2-for-2 with a walk.

In the first of two games on Friday, Shelbyville Central took down the Lebanon Tigers (1-3), 9-3 after five innings.

Lebanon took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first before the Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and six in the fourth.

Ashton Whorley started on the mound for the hosts, pitching a complete 5.0 innings and giving up three runs – two earned – on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts on 75 pitches.

At the plate, Shelbyville Central totaled 10 hits as a team with two walks drawn. McCullough led off batting 2-for-3 with one RBI, Bone went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a double, and Bobo finished 1-for-2 with a walk. Westbrooks went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a double, Thomas, Whorley, and Camron Burke all went 1-for-3 with Burke tallying an RBI, and Vari finished 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

Later that night on Friday, the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off Heritage Christian, 2-1. 

Kaleb Maillet pitched masterfully for Shelbyville Central in 6.0 innings of work. Maillet finished with just one unearned run given up on two hits while striking out 12 batters on 83 pitches. Westbrooks came on in relief for the final inning, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout on 12 pitches.

At the plate for the hosts, Bone finished 3-for-4 with the game-winning run scored, Bobo went 1-for-3 with a walk, and Thomas hit 1-for-4 with the game-winning 2-RBI single. Caden Peacock went 1-for-3, and Vari finished 1-for-3. 

In the first game on Saturday, Shelbyville Central run-ruled Van Buren (3-3), 11-1 after five innings. 

Chase Billig got the start on the mound, finishing with 3.1 innings pitched while giving up just one earned run on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts on 72 pitches.

At the plate, the Golden Eagles tallied eight hits as a team along with four walks with four players hit by a pitch. Bobo was one of those, and he also went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Thomas went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a walk, Whorley finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Burke went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Billig hit 1-for-2, and Vari went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Finally, in the last game of the Classic, Shelbyville Central used a five-run fifth inning to complete the comeback win over Alexandria-Monroe (2-2), 5-3 after six innings.

Braxton Vari started on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings while giving up three runs – two earned – on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts on 69 pitches.

At the plate for Shelbyville Central, McCullough led off batting 2-for-2 with an RBI, a double, and a walk, Bobo went 3-for-3 with two doubles. Thomas went 1-for-2 with a double, Peacock went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Westbrooks finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and a double,  and Vari went 0-for-1 with an RBI. 

Shelbyville Central returns to District 6-AAAA play on Monday night at Coffee County with first-pitch set for 6:00 p.m.

2026 Mid-South Classic, Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles Baseball
