SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (2-2, 2-0) held off a furious fourth quarter rally from the Independence Eagles (1-2, 0-1), 31-28, in Friday night’s home opener to pick up their second consecutive victory in Region 6-6A play.
The Golden Eagles debuted their new turf field along with other various renovations at the Eagles’ Nest, and the hosts treated the home fans to a dandy of a game. Shelbyville ran for 359 yards as a team, and picked off Independence’s star QB, Matthew Horner, with 35 seconds remaining after Reager Edwards tracked down a sailing pass over the middle of the field to seal the win.
“For two years in a row, we graduated great classes of seniors,” Golden Eagles’ Head Coach Jud Dryden said postgame, “This senior class is smaller and lighter, but they – along with the juniors – have all continued to improve and buy in, and the resilience is amazing. They continue to work and continue to get better…you can’t ask for any more than that, and it showed up on the scoreboard.”
Star tailback Robert Bailey finished with 195 yards rushing on 25 carries with 1 TD, but he was forced to exit the game after pulling a hamstring on a 61-yard scamper with about six minutes to go with the result still very much in the balance. Stephen Bobo, who finished 2/6 for 58 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT through the air to go along with eight carries for 92 yards and 1 TD – was also sidelined with a lower leg injury right before halftime and did not return. Even so, freshman Cyonn Rucker stepped in for Bobo and performed admirably, managing the offense and finishing 2/3 for 15 yards and 1 TD to go along with five rushing yards on four carries. Torrion Mathis took Bailey’s place as RB1 for the final two Shelbyville possessions, finishing with 11 rushes for 60 yards on the night.
For Independence, Matthew Horner was unusually inefficient, finishing 18/37 for 262 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT while rushing the ball three times for 26 yards and another touchdown. Eli Garlington led the visitors on the ground with nine carries for 57 yards, but the visitors as a whole finished with just 99 yards rushing as a team against a stout Golden Eagles defense.
Independence opened the scoring on its second possession after both teams went three-and-out to start the game when Horner found Brody Bullock on a slant for a 39-yard touchdown with 7:14 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession, the Golden Eagles were faced with a third-and-six, and Bobo threw an interception to Jordan Gray, giving the visitors a golden opportunity to take a two-score lead early. Instead, the Shelbyville defense stood its ground, forcing a turnover-on-downs.
On its fourth offensive drive, Shelbyville’s offense finally settled into a rhythm, using nine plays to go 76 yards in 3:51 to tie the game after Bobo found Jack Conditt down the right sideline with a perfect throw in the corner of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown.
After forcing a punt, Shelbyville once again found the end zone, this time with Bobo’s legs. After a 55-yard run to the Independence 22-yard line, Bobo found the end zone from 14 yards out on the ground to put the Golden Eagles in front, 14-7, with 7:04 to go in the first half.
With the hosts’ defense forcing yet another punt, Shelbyville put together its third-consecutive scoring drive on its next possession. Starting at their own 19-yard line, the Golden Eagles took nine plays and used 4:11 to cap off an 81-yard touchdown drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Bailey to take a 21-7 lead. To set up Bailey, Bobo found Xzayvier Jordan down the left sideline on a go route for a monster 39-yard gain on a perfectly thrown ball. Unfortunately, that would be Bobo’s final action of the night.
After Horner led a 54-yard drive – capped by a 9-yard TD pass to Hunter Mullen – that used 70 of the 74 remaining seconds in the first half, Shelbyville’s lead was just seven points, 21-14. At halftime, Dryden informed the team that Rucker would be stepping in for the injured Bobo, putting even more onus on the offensive line and running game for the final 24 minutes.
In the second half, neither team scored on their first two possessions. After Independence’s Ben Chassey missed a 38-yard field goal with 1:08 to go in the third quarter, the Golden Eagles put together a culture drive.
Starting at its own 15-yard line following a false start before the first play, Shelbyville Central dialed up nine consecutive runs to reach the Independence four-yard line. Robert Bailey began to gash the visitors’ defense, picking up 14 yards to end the third quarter before opening the fourth quarter with a six yard carry followed by a 21-yard run to cross into Independence territory. Mathis came in to spell Bailey, but the gashing runs stayed coming as the sophomore picked up gains of 13 yards and 15 yards on two of his next four attempts to put the Golden Eagles four yards away from the end zone. After he was tackled for a loss of a yard, Shelbyville dialed up a slant for Chandler Jones, who caught Rucker’s perfect pass for a 5-yard touchdown to double their lead to 28-14 with 8:20 left to play. In all, Shelbyville took 4:48 off the clock to go 85 yards in 10 plays with a freshman QB playing just his fourth drive of the season offensively.
“It’s stuff that we practice,” Dryden said about the success of his underclassmen backfield, “We just try to get them in their wheelhouse and let them do the things that they do well. We don’t ask more of them than what they can do, especially being younger like that. Cyonn [Rucker] is a special talent at quarterback, and we’re excited to see what he’s going to do moving forward whether that’s this coming week or down the road. He’s playing great at corner and he played great at quarterback for us. Then you’ve got Torrion [Mathis] who is playing phenomenally on defense, he’s learning as he goes, and he’s an amazing talent at running back. We’re blessed to say the least, and to have those guys with the way they work is awesome.”
After Independence replied with a 27-yard TD pass from Horner to Hendrix Harvey, the Golden Eagles’ lead was cut in half to 28-21 with 6:43 to go.
However, on Robert Bailey’s final carry of the night, he opened Shelbyville’s ensuing possession by scampering for 61 yards down the right sideline before he pulled up with an injury at the Independence 19-yard line. Shelbyville was ultimately forced to settle for a 35-yard field goal attempt from starting middle linebacker ,Jackson Themm, who calmly drilled the ball through the uprights to give the Golden Eagles an all-important two-score lead, 31-21, with just 4:02 remaining.
Independence responded with a quick-strike touchdown drive that took just 1:11 off the clock, traversing 68 yards in five plays (aided by a pair of SCHS penalties) and finishing with an eight-yard TD run by Horner with 2:43 left to play to trim the lead to 31-28.
Shelbyville picked up a first down on the ensuing possession, but some minor clock mismanagement gave the ball back to the visitors with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter. However, Jackson Themm yet again put his special teams imprint on the game, pinning Independence at their own 4-yard line after a perfectly placed 44-yard punt.
“He [Jackson Themm] has been a great kicker since he showed up, so now it’s just his time,” Dryden said, “The nice thing is, as soon as Johnathan Betzelberger comes back, we have two, so I mean, shoot, let’s go.”
With just 66 seconds remaining and no timeouts, Horner found Harvey down the left sideline with a perfect 39-yard pass on the second play of the drive to give the visitors a realistic shot of at least getting into field goal range. Instead, just two plays later, Horner was nudged just as he released the ball over the middle of the field, sailing the pass over his intended receiver and into the waiting arms of Shelbyville’s Reager Edwards to seal a massive region victory for the Golden Eagles.
Shelbyville improves to 2-2 (2-0) and is set to travel to Brentwood on Friday night with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
