MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (2-0) fended off the hometown Siegel Stars (1-1) in a 79-71 road win on Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles utilized their depth to their advantage, as four different players scored at least 14 points on the night. Ladarius Sparrow put in a team-high 17 points with five three-pointers, Tae’Shawn Shelton scored 16 points, Tommie Cannon added 15 points, and Jevon Lee chipped in with 14 points, including 12 in the second half. Malek Johnson tallied nine points of his own as well.
For the Stars, Kale Martin scored a game-high 24 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter to lead the comeback attempt, but it was not enough in the end. R.J. Biggers scored 16 second-half points for Siegel, finished 8/10 at the charity stripe, and Marque Forrest added 13 points with three three-pointers.
To start, Siegel jumped out to an early 16-13 lead after the opening period with Martin and Daman Goring leading the way with six points apiece for the hosts. Then, in the second quarter, the Golden Eagles went on a run to take the lead, heading into the halftime locker room with a 33-31 advantage after outscoring the Stars 20-15.
In the third quarter, Sparrow showcased his sharpshooting ability from the outside, connecting on a trio of triples to lead Shelbyville to a 56-50 lead heading into the final frame. Lee added six points of his own as the Golden Eagles narrowly outscored Siegel 23-19 in the period to extend their lead.
In the fourth, Lee scored six more points, Sparrow connected on his fifth three-pointer, Cannon added a triple of his own, and Shelton went 3/4 at the free throw line to keep the hosts at arm’s length. They were able to fend off a furious comeback attempt spearheaded by Martin’s 11 fourth-quarter points to grab their second win of the season, 79-71.
Siegel falls to 1-1 and will host Gallatin on Monday.
Shelbyville improves to 2-0 and will travel to Glencliff on Friday night, LIVE on WLIJ 98.7 and AM 1580 at 5:45 p.m.
