Shelbyville, Tenn. – Heading into Tuesday’s rematch against Warren County, the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (10-13, 5-2) were looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 44-43 loss at Coffee County, and that is exactly what they did, taking down the Pioneers (17-4, 6-1), 57-55, inside Rick Insell Gymnasium to hand the visitors their first District 9-AAAA loss of the season in a stunning upset.
Jordan Taylor had his coming out party against the Pioneers, finishing with a game-high 24 points with 15 of them coming in the second half alone to help the Golden Eagles recover from an eight-point halftime deficit. Tae’Shawn Shelton finished in double-figures with 10 points while Jack Conditt connected on two huge three-pointers and chipped in with eight points.
For Warren County, Nate Turner led the Pioneers in scoring with a team-high 18 points, including four made three-pointers in the first half. Deashawn Adams finished with just 13 points after scoring nine in the opening period of play, and Keyton Reno chipped in with 12 points of his own with nine of them coming in the first half.
To start, the visiting Pioneers jumped out to an early lead, 19-15, after the initial eight minutes of play. Adams got things going with an and-one layup followed by three more two-point field goals. Turner and Devin Fish each found the range from downtown, but the Golden Eagles weren’t too far behind. Taylor and Shelton each scored four points in the period while Malek Johnson connected on a three-pointer for his only points of the game. Lee chipped in with four points as well.
In the second quarter, Warren County started to take control of the game. Turner exploded for three triples in the period as the Pioneers outscored Shelbyville, 16-12, to take a 35-27 lead into the halftime locker room. Conditt scored five points for the Golden Eagles, including the first of two threes, while Taylor also scored five to go with a two-pointer from Braylon Johnson.
Coming out of the locker room, Shane Young’s Golden Eagles completely flipped the script, holding the Pioneers to just 12 points in the third quarter with no three-pointers. Meanwhile, Jordan Taylor began to take over on the offensive end, getting to his spots and punctuating his 11-point period with a three-pointer to trim the Warren County lead to just five points, 47-42, entering the final frame.
With all the momentum on the home side, Warren County just could not find an answer on the offensive end, scoring just eight points total in the fourth quarter. Turner was held to just four points as Shelbyville had five different guys score at least two points in the period. Conditt connected on his second three of the night, Taylor scored four more points along with Shelton, and Braylon Johnson, who finished with just five points on the night, connected on the two biggest free throws of the season to put Shelbyville up for good and into the win column, 57-55.
Shelbyville improves to 10-13 (5-2) and moves into a one-game lead for second place ahead of Lincoln County, who the Golden Eagles will play on Friday, LIVE on WLIJ 98.7 and AM 1580 in Fayetteville starting at 5:45 p.m.
