SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (7-3) handed Centennial (2-5) their fourth-consecutive defeat on Friday night, 93-73.
Tae’Shawn Shelton exploded for a career night, scoring a game-high 28 points in the rout. Jevon Lee also scored 19 points, Tommie Cannon added 13 points, and Jordan Taylor chipped in with 12 points.
For the Cougars, Matt Barton led the visitors with 20 points on the night, Bryeen Newman added 13 points, and Ethan Monge scored 10 points of his own.
Early on, Shelbyville jumped out to a 24-17 lead to end the first quarter behind Shelton and Lee each scoring eight points in the period. Taylor chipped in with six points and connected on one of Shelbyville’s two made three-pointers all game.
However, Centennial made a run in the second quarter, closing the deficit to 43-41 heading into the halftime locker room behind Newman’s nine points along with Barton’s seven. Barton connected on three of his four three-pointers in the first half while the Cougars hit 11 threes in the entire game. Shelton brought his halftime tally up to 16 points with eight more in the second quarter with Lee adding six more.
Coming out of the halftime locker room, Shelbyville played with a different level of intensity, outscoring Centennial, 27-12, to take a commanding 70-53 lead heading into the final frame. Shelton led the Golden Eagles once again with nine points while Cannon chipped in with seven points as well as Malek Johnson’s first six points of the night to build Shelbyville’s 17-point lead.
In the fourth quarter, Shelbyville scored 20 or more points yet again, outscoring the visitors, 23-20, to take home the 20-point victory. Nine different Golden Eagles scored at least two points in the period.
Shelbyville improves to 7-3 and travels to Montgomery Bell Academy to take on the Big Red on Monday night.
