Golden Eagles Secure Season Sweep at Spring Hill

Columbia, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (11-14, 6-3) used a 22-point second quarter to separate themselves from the Spring Hill Raiders (2-18, 0-9) and take home a 14-point win, 65-51, on Tuesday night.

With the win, Shelbyville locks up the 2-seed in the upcoming District 9-AAAA Tournament due to their tiebreaker advantage over Coffee County, who is the only other team that could potentially end the regular season with the same district record with the Golden Eagles.

Shelbyville forced 19 Spring Hill turnovers overall while just committing seven turnovers themselves. This allowed the Golden Eagles to have three players reach double-figures despite missing Jordan Taylor. Tae’Shawn Shelton led the way with a team-high 19 points, including a trio of triples. Jevon Lee got back on track with 15 of his 17 points coming in the first half while Jack Conditt continued his recent scoring surge with 14 points and a pair of three-pointers.

For Spring Hill, Elijah Carter led all scorers with a game-high 28 points, but he was the only Raider to score in double-figures. Jonathan Knight chipped in with eight points for the hosts.

From the opening tip, Lee came out aggressive, finishing the opening period with eight of Shelbyville’s 16 points. He was matched only by Carter, who went 4-6 from the charity stripe in the quarter and scored eight of his team’s 12 points in the first quarter. Shelton also scored six points for the Golden Eagles.

In the second quarter, Shelbyville’s offense took itself to another level, outscoring the Raiders, 22-10, to take a 38-22 lead into the halftime locker room. Shelton connected on a pair of three-pointers, Jaylin Robinson added another triple and a pair of free-throws, and Lee scored seven more points to lead Shelbyville. The Golden Eagles’ defense was the biggest reason for the 22 points, holding Carter to just one made free-throw in the quarter.

Coming out of halftime, Spring Hill began to chip away at the 16-point deficit, outscoring Shelbyville by five, 16-11, to cut the lead to 49-38 entering the final frame. Carter scored 11 points in the quarter to lead the way for the Raiders, but Conditt connected on a pair of timely threes along with Shelton hitting a three to go with a two-point field goal to keep the double-digit lead intact.

In the final frame, Shelbyville made just enough free throws to hold the Raiders. Carter scored eight more points in the fourth quarter, but Spring Hill could only muster up five points combined from the rest of the team. The Golden Eagles saw six different players score in the period, outscoring the hosts by four, 15-11, to put the finishing touches on a 65-51 road win.

Spring Hill will enter the district tournament as the 6-seed.

Shelbyville Central will return home for Senior Night against Columbia on Thursday to wrap up the regular season, LIVE on WLIJ and AM 1580 starting at 5:45 p.m.
