MCMINNVILLE, Tenn. – After blowing out District 6-AAAA foe Warren County (9-2, 0-2) by 17 runs on Monday night, Shelbyville Central (9-1, 2-0) used five runs in the seventh inning to secure the series sweep on the road Tuesday night, 5-0.
Brody Thomas started on the mound for the visitors, and he threw a complete-game no-hitter with just four walks to seven strikeouts on 105 pitches to pick up the win.
Gage Walker got the start for the Pioneers, pitching six shutout innings before giving up five runs – three earned – in the top of the seventh inning before being pulled for Daylen Holguin. Walker finished giving up four hits and five walks with five strikeouts on 104 pitches in 6.1 innings. Holguin got the final two outs in seven pitches.
Neither team scored through the first six innings, and the Golden Eagles finished with just four hits as a team on the night after an impressive performance on Monday. The visitors did work five walks in total, and took advantage of a pair of Pioneer errors while overcoming a trio of errors themselves.
In the top of the seventh, Case Davis got things started by drawing a leadoff walk. After a pickoff attempt by Walker flew past his first baseman and allowed Davis to take second, Brody Thomas laid down a perfect bunt down the first base line that resulted in a base hit. Then, Caden Peacock delivered an RBI-double into right field on an 0-2 count to drive home the first run of the game.
Ashton Whorley followed that by working a walk to load the bases, and after Chase Billig struck out, Braxton Vari worked another walk to double the Golden Eagles lead.
With the bases still loaded, Warren County brought in Holguin, and on his second pitch to Miles McCullough, the Golden Eagles’ centerfielder reached first safely on an error by the Pioneers’ shortstop, driving home their third run of the inning. Blake Bone drove home Whorley from third on a sacrifice-fly to center, and then Braxton Vari scored the fifth and final run on a passed ball.
Brody Thomas promptly shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to secure the sweep.
At the plate for Shelbyville Central, McCullough went 0-for-1 with an RBI, a walk, and a HBP at the leadoff spot. Bone was 0-for-3, but his sac-fly resulted in an RBI. Elijah Westbrooks finished 1-for-4, Brody Thomas went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, and Caden Peacock delivered the massive RBI-double in a 1-for-3 night. Vari went 0-for-1 but worked a pair of walks and delivered an RBI.
Shelbyville Central is set to take on Smyrna in a two-game series on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. before taking on district foe Lincoln County on Monday and Tuesday.
