MCMINNVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (3-1) fell to Sequatchie County (1-2) on Friday, 6-5, before bouncing back with a 1-0 win over Moore County (2-1) on Saturday in the final two days of the New Balance Classic at Warren County.
In the first matchup, Shelbyville Central committed four errors in the field, allowing Sequatchie Co. to walk off the Golden Eagles with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
For Shelbyville Central, Ashton Whorley got the start on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up just two runs – one earned – on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts on 68 pitches. Stephen Bobo came on with 1.2 innings in relief, giving up just two hits with four strikeouts and two unearned runs on 36 pitches. Blake Bone threw the next 0.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs on no hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Finally, Elijah Westbrooks was brought in with one out in the bottom of the seventh, getting one strikeout before Sequatchie Co. delivered a walk-off hit.
Bobo finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, Case Davis went 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI, and Bone batted 1-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. Braxton Vari delivered the final two hits for the Golden Eagles, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and one RBI.
For Sequatchie County, Dillon Frizzell batted 2-for-3 with a walk in the leadoff spot, Colton Cribbs went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, and Tucker Lee finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and a walk.
On the mound, Holdon Armstrong got the start, lasting 4.0 innings and giving up just one unearned run on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts on 81 pitches. Eli Swanger came on in relief and pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four runs – two earned – on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts on 44 pitches. Ryker Terry relieved Swanger in the top of the seventh, getting the final three outs on one strikeout and 12 pitches.
Sequatchie took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Golden Eagles tied things up at 1-1 in the top of the third. Sequatchie re-took the lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth, then Shelbyville Central tied the game with one run in the top of the fifth before taking a 4-2 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. However, Sequatchie County scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game up at 4-4 before scoring the final two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off Shelbyville Central.
In the second game, the Golden Eagles shut out Moore County with a 1-0 win on Saturday behind a sixth inning run from Stephen Bobo. Brody Thomas got the start for Shelbyville Central, pitching 6.0 innings of no-hit ball with 11 strikeouts and three walks on 92 pitches. Braxton Vari came on to get the save in the seventh, giving up just one hit and no runs on seven pitches.
Moore County’s Cole Taylor performed admirably against a dangerous Golden Eagles’ lineup, pitching 6.0 innings and giving up just one earned run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts on 91 pitches.
Bobo went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a stolen base, and he scored the lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Chase Billig went 1-for-2 at the plate, and Braylon Casteel also finished 1-for-2 with a single.
Shelbyville Central is currently scheduled to take on Tipton Christian on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Community on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
