SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (9-5, 2-2) were unable to prevent Lincoln County (14-5, 2-2) from completing the District 6-AAAA series sweep on Tuesday, 8-3.
The Falcons jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the top of the fifth before the Golden Eagles clawed back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lincoln County worked five walks and tallied 11 hits while Shelbyville Central totaled nine hits and three walks, but the hosts committed three errors compared to the visitors committing zero.
Brody Thomas got the start on the mound for the Golden Eagles, lasting 2.2 innings and giving up five runs – three earned – on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts on 53 pitches. Chase Billig came on in relief for 3.1 innings of work, giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout. Finally, Ashton Whorley came in for the top of the seventh, getting all three outs with two walks on 20 pitches.
For Lincoln County, Clint Quick got the start on the mound, and he was effective. Quick lasted 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs – all coming in the bottom of the sixth – on six total hits with two walks and five strikeouts on 90 pitches. Gabe Johnson came on for the final 1.2 innings, giving up no runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts on 45 pitches.
At the plate for the Golden Eagles, Miles McCullough led off and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles, Blake Bone went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, and Case Davis went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Thomas finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, Caden Peacock went 1-for-3 with one RBI, Ashton Whorley delivered an RBI, and Billig finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Braxton Vari also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a single.
Lincoln County scored one run in the top of the first and then two runs in both the top of the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead. After neither team scored in the fourth, the Falcons plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 8-0 lead before the Golden Eagles generated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the scoring.
Shelbyville Central falls to 9-5 overall. The Golden Eagles are set to participate in the Mid-South Classic this week before returning to District 6-AAAA play on Monday, Apr. 6, at Coffee County.
