Golden Eagles Take Down Cavaliers in Road District Win

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (13-8, 2-0) picked up their second District 6-AAAA win at Cookeville (11-6, 0-3) on Tuesday night, 67-50.

Bo Maxwell led all scorers for the Cavaliers, netting a game-high 22 points in defeat. Jalen Doak was his only teammate to reach double-figures, finishing with 14 points.

Meanwhile, Jordan Taylor led Shelbyville with a team-high 15 points, all coming in the final three quarters. Jevon Lee finished with 13 points, and Tae’Shawn Shelton added 11 points for the Golden Eagles. Tommie Cannon chipped in with nine second-half points to help the visitors pull away.

Early on, Cookeville came out on fire from downtown. Maxwell connected on a trio of three-pointers in the opening period, leading his Cavaliers to a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second, the hosts managed to maintain their slim lead, although Shelbyville Central did outscore Cookeville, 16-13, in the period, entering halftime trailing by just a single point, 30-29. Taylor got going in the period, leading all scorers with eight points. 

Coming out for the second half, Shelbyville turned up the heat on the defensive end, holding Cookeville to just seven points in the third quarter while scoring 16 themselves. Shelton scored a team-high five points in the period while the Golden Eagles held Maxwell to just two points, taking a 45-37 lead entering the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Shelbyville was finally able to pull away, outscoring the Cavaliers, 22-13, en route to the 17-point margin of victory. Taylor hit a pair of two-point field goals in the period while Cannon, Shelton, and Lee all scored six points to close out Cookeville and improve to 2-0 in district play.

The Golden Eagles improve to 13-8 overall. Shelbyville Central returns home on Friday night against district foe Lincoln County with the opening tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
