Golden Eagles Take Game One Against Smyrna

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (9-2, 2-0) won their eighth-consecutive game on Thursday night with a 7-2 win in game one of a non-district series over the Smyrna Bulldogs (6-9, 0-0).

  Shelbyville Central got a complete-game start from lefty Ashton Whorley on the mound. Whorley gave up two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters on 101 pitches.

After setting down Smyrna in order in the top of the first inning, Chance Mosely launched a leadoff solo home run off of Whorley to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage. Smyrna tacked on a second run to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but then the Golden Eagles found their bats.

First, Shelbyville Central cut the lead in half with one run in the bottom of the third, but then the hosts put together a 4-run fourth inning to flip the game around and take a 5-2 lead. 

Moseley got the start for the Bulldogs, but Shelbyville Central knocked him from the game in the fourth inning. Moseley went 3.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts on 74 pitches.

The Golden Eagles tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while Whorley continued to dominate on the mound and earn the win.

At the plate for Shelbyville Central, Miles McCullough led off and went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a double, and a HBP. Blake Bone batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, Elijah Westbrooks finished 1-for-2 with a walk, and Case Davis went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a double, and two walks. Brody Thomas batted 1-for-3 with an RBI, Caden Peacock went 1-for-1 with a walk, and Braxton Vari finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Golden Eagles travel to Smyrna on Saturday afternoon for game two of the two-game series against the Bulldogs. First-pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
