SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (12-8, 1-0) opened District 6-AAAA play with a hard-fought 59-47 win over Coffee County (9-8, 0-1) on Friday night.
Shelbyville committed just six turnovers all night while forcing 15 from the Red Raiders. Despite not making a single three-pointer, the Golden Eagles rode their physical defense from the opening tip to create enough separation on the scoreboard entering the fourth quarter.
The Golden Eagles were led by Jevon Lee’s game-high 19 points, Jordan Taylor’s 14 points, and Tae’Shawn Shelton’s 13 points in a balanced offensive display.
Meanwhile, Coffee County was led by a team-high 16 points from Kaysen Lowery. Andre Nicoll was the only other Red Raider to reach double-figures, finishing with 10 points on the night.
Shelbyville raced out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the opening period behind a seven-point stanza from Lee. Lowery accounted for all five of Coffee County’s first-quarter points. In the second quarter, the Red Raiders made some adjustments offensively and outscored the Golden Eagles, 15-13, but still trailed by 13 points, 28-15, entering the halftime locker room. Taylor led Shelbyville with five points in the period while Lee chipped in with a pair of baskets.
Coming out for the second half, Shelbyville outscored Coffee County, 14-13, to take a 42-28 lead heading into the final frame. Lee, Taylor, and Tommie Cannon each scored four points in the period to counter the two triples from Lowery.
In the fourth quarter, Shelton led the way with six points while Lee and Taylor added four points apiece as the Golden Eagles squashed any comeback attempt from the Red Raiders. Nicoll scored six in the period, but it was ultimately not enough to overcome the double-digit deficit.
The Golden Eagles improve to 12-8 overall. Shelbyville travels to Cookeville to continue District 6-4A play on Tuesday night starting at 6:00 p.m.
